Abstract
Infectious diseases continue to pose a global challenge, with a prevalence rate of 18.4%, and the highest mortality rates, reaching 46.8%, occurring in developing countries in 2019. One preventive measure against infectious diseases is the introduction and enhancement of knowledge, starting from early childhood, by instilling the culture of Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB). Early childhood and school-age groups are crucial in shaping children's quality of life during their formative years. However, health issues such as diarrhea, contributing to a mortality rate of 14.5% in 2020, affect this age group and contribute to the increasing prevalence of stunting in Indonesia. One area in Indonesia grappling with infectious disease issues is the Katimbang Subdistrict, Biringkanaya District, Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province. Observations reveal this area's susceptibility to flooding, with the highest health complaints being skin infections and diarrhea. Hence, it is crucial to engage in community service by providing CHLB education targeting early childhood and school-aged children in this area. The objective of this initiative is to enhance elementary school students' knowledge and understanding of CHLB in the Katimbang Subdistrict. Community service methods involve lectures utilizing leaflets, posters, and animated videos. Results from this community service effort show a significant increase in students' knowledge of CHLB, from a pre-test score of 77.61 ± 11.77 to 90.07 ± 10.87 in the post-test, with a crucial difference (p-value < 0.05). The significant improvement in students' knowledge demonstrates the success and effectiveness of this community service in enhancing their understanding of CHLB.
