Edukasi Budidaya Maggot BSF untuk Pengolahan Sampah Organik dan Sumber Protein Pakan Ikan di Rammang-Rammang Kabupaten Maros Maggot Cultivation Education for Organic Waste Processing and a Source of Fish Feed Protein in Rammang-Rammang, Maros Regency
Main Article Content
Abstract
The increasing volume of household organic waste and the high cost of fish feed pose challenges for the community in the Rammang-Rammang area, Maros Regency. One solution that can be implemented sustainably is the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots to decompose organic waste and produce an alternative protein source for fish feed. This Community Service activity aims to increase the community's knowledge, skills, and independence in managing organic waste through the cultivation of BSF maggots, as well as to encourage their use as a raw material for economically valuable fish feed. The implementation method includes stages of socialization, counseling, training in BSF maggot cultivation practices, assistance with the construction of media and simple cages, demonstrations of organic waste processing, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests and observations of community participation. The target groups of the activity were community groups, fish farmers, and village youth in the Rammang-Rammang area. The activity results showed an increase in participants' understanding of BSF cultivation techniques, organic waste management, and the use of maggots as a protein source for fish feed. Participants were also able to practice the cultivation process, from media preparation and larval rearing to harvesting maggots, independently. In addition to reducing organic waste, this activity creates opportunities for circular-economy-based business development by producing maggots and organic fertilizer from cultivation residues. Thus, education on BSF maggot cultivation is an effective community empowerment strategy to support environmental management, fisheries feed security, and sustainable economic development in the Rammang-Rammang area of Maros Regency.
