Main Article Content
Abstract
The increasingly rapid and unpredictable pace of change today requires the Catholic Church to develop leaders capable of managing change adaptively in pastoral ministry. As the complexity of church ministry and the demands of the faithful continue to increase, young priests require stronger change-management competencies to anticipate, manage, and lead change effectively within their pastoral responsibilities. This community service program aimed to strengthen change management capacity to enhance pastoral leadership among young priests in the Diocese of Surabaya. The program was implemented through the Quinquennale ongoing formation program using a capacity-building approach that integrated a participatory training model, case discussion, reflection on pastoral experiences, and action plan development. The training covered change analysis, change planning, leadership communication, resistance management, decision-making, and reflective pastoral practice. The results demonstrated improvements in participants' conceptual understanding and practical skills in analyzing change, developing adaptive strategies, fostering effective communication, and leading collaborative change initiatives in pastoral ministry. Beyond strengthened change management capacity, the program also fostered a renewed awareness that change is an integral dimension of the church’s mission and should be addressed creatively, reflectively, and transformatively. This program contributes to the development of a sustainable formation model for young priests, enabling them to exercise adaptive, innovative, and responsive pastoral leadership in addressing the evolving needs of the faithful amid ongoing societal change.
