Characterization of Avocado (Persea americana Mill) Extract Nanoparticles on the Growth of Propionibacterium acne

Abstract

Propionibacterium acne is one of the bacteria that causes acne. One of the plants that can be used as an alternative herbal medicine is avocado (Persea americana Mill). Nanoparticles are solid colloidal particles with diameter ranging from 1-1000 nm. One of the techniques commonly used in making extract nanoparticles is the ionic gelation technique whisch has benefits such as a simple process, the use of non-organic solvents, and ease of process control. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of avocado fruit extract maceration with extract nanoparticles (Persea americana Mill) on the growth of Propionibacterium acne. Avocado fruit were extracted by maceration and characterization nanoparticle with PSA (Particle Size Analyzer) test and FTIR (Fouerier Transform Infra Red). Finally measure the inhibition zone using the diffusion method. The results showed that the inhibitory power of avocado extract at a concentration of 25% was 16,50 mm, at a concentration of 50% was 13,26 mm, and at a concentration of 75% was 32,27 mm. Meanwhile, avocado extract nanoparticles at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% produced the same inhibitory power, which was 6 mm. The results of statistical analysis using the Friedman nonparametric test showed a value (p<0.05) is 0.000 indicating a significant difference between the inhibition zone of avocado fruit extract and avocado fruit extract nanoparticles.
